LaPagnotta Coles New World AdvertisementItalians identify the word pagnotta with a round shaped loaf of bread. A very ancient Italian saying states that “oggi ho guadagnato la mia pagnotta” or “today I have earned my pagnotta” – (referred to as the daily bread).

The founder of La Pagnotta Italian Bakery & Café, Mr Fernando (Nando) De Maria, is originally from Rome, Italy. As a young boy, he was involved in the bread & pizza industry there, and, after his wedding in 1967, he emigrated to Toronto, Canada, where, together with his elder brother, established La Romana Bakery in 1976.

In November 1981 Nando and his family came to Perth. Then in 1983 the family, Nando, his wife Pina and their children Walter and Patrizia opened a Pizza Shop in Como.

Equipped with an oven and bread mixer, Nando began experimenting with his first authentic Italian bread loaves. After sharing his daily bread with friends the demand for the first pagnotta loaves soon grew. The family rented larger premises in Osborne Park and registered the business name La Pagnotta Italian Bakery in September 1986.

People had started addressing Nando as Mr Pagnotta, believing this to be his family name. The family liked the idea so much that they redesigned their logo to feature Mr Pagnotta.

La Pagnotta employs around 45 people. The company continues the old traditions with a prime focus on quality, not quantity.

In late 1996 La Pagnotta moved their production to the present premises in Malaga. In 2004 the company acquired a competitor to enhance their retail presence. In  November 2007  Nando and his son Walter took on David Iveson as their partner.

Thank you all for your continued patronage and for having spent a few moments with us today. May God bless all of you and your families.
